Telegram Guides

This page covers the basic setup path for Telegram, including sign-in, interface understanding, chat actions, group and channel use, and privacy-related settings.

Sign-in and account setup

Telegram account access begins with a phone number. Before signing in, make sure the number can receive a verification code and that the device has a stable network connection.

  1. Open Telegram and start the sign-in flow.
  2. Select your country or region and enter your phone number in the correct format.
  3. Wait for the verification code, which may arrive by SMS, call, or an already active Telegram session.
  4. Enter the code, set your display name, and complete the basic account profile if needed.

Interface overview

The core interface is usually organized around conversations, search, navigation, and new-message actions. Understanding these areas makes later actions easier to follow.

  • Chat list: the main entry point for private chats, groups, channels, and recent activity.
  • Navigation menu: commonly includes contacts, new group creation, Saved Messages, settings, and account-related options.
  • Search: used for contacts, groups, channels, bots, and message history lookup.
  • Compose or new-chat action: used to start a direct chat or create a group or channel.

Basic chat actions

Everyday use is built around message sending, media exchange, chat editing, and saved content handling.

  • File sharing: attachments support documents, images, videos, archives, and other common file formats.
  • Voice and video messages: voice notes and short video messages support faster replies and lightweight communication.
  • Edit and delete: sent messages can often be edited or removed when corrections or cleanup are needed.
  • Saved Messages: acts as a personal cloud note area for storing links, files, or reference material.

Groups and channels

Groups and channels serve different communication roles, so choosing the right structure depends on whether the goal is discussion or distribution.

Groups

Groups are better suited to discussion, coordination, and collaborative interaction. Admin controls can define permissions, posting limits, moderation, and message flow.

Channels

Channels are better suited to one-to-many publishing. They are commonly used for announcements, content updates, notifications, and ongoing audience communication.

Security and privacy

2-step verification is a basic protection setting
Once enabled, logging in on a new device requires not only a code but also an extra password, which adds another layer of account protection.

Other settings worth reviewing include:

  • Phone number visibility: controls who can view the number attached to the account.
  • Active sessions: shows where the account is still signed in and allows unfamiliar sessions to be removed.
  • Secret Chats: used for conversations that need tighter control over message visibility, retention, and device scope.
